Restoration of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA)
May 16, 2022 4:21 pmWe recently completed a project for the multi-award winning Beard Construction at a historic public landmark in Bristol’s Clifton suburb, carrying out the build cleaning after the restoration works of the Grade II listed Royal West of England Academy (RWA).
The Light and Inspiration Project was a £3.8 million restoration project led by Beard Construction and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. RWA, built in 1858, is Bristol’s first public art gallery. The restoration work is the most significant development to the building in more than a century.
As a grade II listed building, it came with challenges as to the degree in which alteration can made to the existing architecture. The building went under significant upgrades, including urgent structural repairs, improving the large roof lanterns located in the galleries, fitting a modern lift for improved access, a larger and updated café, and improving the forecourt and outdoor space.
The front facing windows were enlarged from ceiling to floor, opening up the space and drawing in more natural light – a feature that has made a significant improvement to the aesthetic of the building, all while preserving the classic and historic attributes.
Starting in December 2021, our CSCS certified construction cleaning team carried out external cleaning to the roof lanterns, followed by the internal build clean to the two galleries beneath. Continuing with the schedule, we carried out the build clean to the rest of the building, spanning three floors . Our work included, high-level cleaning, window cleaning and the final sparkle clean to the building – finishing in May this year.
With the improvement to the windows and the re-design of the front forecourt, the building feels significantly more appealing and welcoming to public from the street-view. Without a doubt, the upgrades will help to draw in the public to this historic Bristol landmark throughout the next century and more. If you have yet to view some of the latest exhibits and seen for your own eye the improvements to the RWA, we suggest you do.
Once again, we would like to thank Beard Construction and their skilled site management team for including us in this wonderful project.
